Bill O’Reilly Goes After MJ and the Black Community, Buh!
July 8th, 2009
I realize that we usually don’t post outside of podcasts and interview segments, but this goes straight to the point and brings up issues that are central to MJ’s legacy- particularly his relationship to race and the black community’s response to it. Bill goes head to head with Marc Lamont Hill, PH.D. from Columbia University about MJ’s “blackness” and the difference between a racist issue and a racial issue. Be ready to hurl. Hit us up if you want to respond!

The podcast is dialogue free, so here is the playlist. Holler at yer boy! RIP. xoxoxo

Locos con Ojos Girls Premiere!
June 2nd, 2009So our coming out party at First Thursday on Alberta was generally a great success. We talked to tons of people, gave out lots of prizes, and rocked our radio show for hours! I am posting an audio segment and photos of our interviews with folks about race. We asked questions about signifiers of white privilege, stages of white identity development, and the differences between personal, cultural, and institutional racism. Below are explanations of all those terms and links to more information.

Locos con Ojos Girls
I learned a lot from talking to people, I hope that people thought about race in a new way too. Some questions were hard to reword for children, such as “Is this true or false for you? I can dress in second hand clothes, swear in public, and drink on my porch without people attributing this to the bad morals or illiteracy of my race?” No one we talked to was familiar with the stages of white identity development and not everyone liked being confronted with this timeline. People were generally excited about differentiating between types of racism, it doesn’t ask anyone to accept responsibility. Lots of people, especially kids, loved to play and thanked us for bringing our project to Alberta! See you next month.
